Ty's Birth Story:
A few nights before Ty was born we went to Draper to babysit the Liljenquists (the cute family I used to nanny). On our way home we stopped by Walmart. It was horrible weather and 11 o'clock at night. When we got there we both stopped in the bathroom and then started shopping. As we were walking around I had to run back to the bathroom because I felt like I had peed my pants a little! I had started bleeding a little bit. I didn't know what that meant but I knew it wouldn't be more than a few days before I had the baby! The whole next day (Friday) and Saturday I was leaking a lot of fluid. I secretly got my hospital bag ready to go. I thought if I told John then I'd jinx it and any contractions Id been having would go away. After a few contractions Saturday afternoon we decided to run errands and walk all over to really get them going.
We went to target, best buy, and the mall and just walked and walked and walked. I kept leaking and decided I wanted to go to the hospital just to see if it was my water that maybe had a tear in it or something. I figured they'd send us home but I knew if we didn't go it would bug me all night. So after getting to the hospital, they had me change into a gown and the nurse tested the fluid and then monitored me for another hour. I was having contractions but they were irregular and not intense enough. She said it was nothing but to come back if my contractions got stronger or if I felt a gush of fluid. We drove home and went to the Bodines to hang out.
We were there from 9:30-12:30 am and my contractions got stronger while we were there so I was secretly timing them on my phone. They were coming every 6-7 minutes but after we walked home they went back to every 10 minutes. I decided to try to sleep through them since I didn't want to go back to the hospital and get sent home again. I woke up a few times with contractions but around 3:30 am decided to get up and pee. When I stood up I felt a huge gush and my garments were soaked! I ran to the bathroom to clean up and take a shower. When I got out I woke John up and then had another big gush. We got dressed and rushed to the hospital. We got there around 4:45 am and they tested my fluid again. This time my water had definitely broken! They got me hooked up to an IV and started the antibiotic for group B strep around 6:15 am. It needed to be in my system until 10:15 am for it to work. The also started me on pitocin. That helped move my contractions along and made them really intense.
By 7:45 am I was in the most intense pain of my life! I was only at a 4 at this point so I asked for the epidural. They told me the next anesthesiologist would be there at 8am. He didn't come to our room until 8:15 am. It was a long half hour! After the epidural I felt very relaxed and even dozed off once or twice.
The nurse we had was the best ever! If I could request her and the anesthesiologist again I would in a heart beat for every kid I have! The nurse came to check me at 10 am and I was at an 8 or a 9. I remember her saying, "Wow, it's like your body has done this before! you're totally meant to have kids." That was pretty cool and I felt really lucky! I started pushing around 12 or 12:15 pm. The nurse said he had a lot of dark hair, I was surprised. I thought for sure he'd be blonde like his dad!
Ty was born at 12:48 pm on Sunday March 4th, 2012. We missed stake conference that day but a cute old couple brought us the sacrament and a spiritual thought. John blessed the sacrament and I was grateful they had people to come around and do that! Our parents came at 12pm after stake conference but didn't get to meet Ty til around 2pm. Right after he was born they wiped him off a little and put him on my chest. John cut the umbilical cord and I got to cuddle with Ty for a few minutes. Then they took him and weighed him and did some other stuff while I got stitched up. He was 8 lbs 3 oz and 19.5 inches long. He looked just like a clement to me! Later that day his face had already changed so much and he then reminded me of a smith, it was crazy how fast he was already changing.
Our parents and Mary came in and took turns holding him while I ate. I was starving! They took us down to the fourth floor and then took Ty to the nursery with John where they gave him a bath and stuff. After they were done they came back to my room and we got to hang out the rest of the day with visitors. It was one of the coolest experiences John and I have ever shared together! I knew I wanted to have a bunch of kids :) We are so grateful for our new baby! He is so sweet and fun.
